What Happens To Your Body As You Age?

Aging is not a problem exclusive to your skin. It also affects the rest of your body externally and internally. Generally speaking, the changes in the composition and function of your cells are responsible for these.

Cells are made to reproduce for your organs and tissues to work properly. However, the more they serve their purpose, the faster they deteriorate and become less active. As a result, they become larger and increase in mass which makes it harder for them to divide. This also causes imbalances in the body such as excessive production of fat, oxidative stress, and protein and iron deficiency.

On the bigger picture, here are the changes you can expect from your body as you approach your mid to late adulthood:

  1. Your gums and teeth change.

The nerves in your teeth shrink and your gums recede as you get older. This makes it easier for the bacteria in your mouth to proliferate, causing gum inflammation and tooth decay. The teeth also appear shorter and the enamel becomes thinner and weaker.

  1. Your heart works harder to pump blood.

Because the rate at which red blood cells travel from the bloodstream to the heart decreases as your age increases, the amount of oxygen and nutrients sent back to the heart lessens, causing the cardiac muscle cells to weaken and thus reducing the heart’s ability to pump blood.

  1. Your bones become brittle.

Unlike when you were younger, your bones tend to reabsorb calcium and phosphorus instead of storing them once you age, making them weak and brittle. Vitamin D deficiency and low gut calcium absorption also contributes to this as the body naturally signals the bones to release the amount of calcium it needs when these happen.

  1. Your sense of sight and hearing weakens.

As you get older, the lenses of your eyes harden and become less flexible, diminishing your eyes’ ability to focus on nearby objects. On the other hand, age-related hearing loss is mostly caused by the damage of tiny hair cells and changes in the auditory nerve but can also be brought by overexposure to noise.

  1. Your body energy declines.

As you lose your muscle mass as you turn older, your body’s ability to convert food into energy also slows down, making you feel easily fatigued. This is also the reason why older people are more prone to weight gain.

  1. Your skin feels drier and less supple.

Besides the boost in the production of free radicals that inhibit cell renewal, factors like low production of natural oil, hormones, and collagen also make your skin drier and less supple as you age. Getting older also means getting exposed to ultraviolet rays for a longer time, which breaks down your skin’s elastin, the protein fibre that keeps it from wrinkling and sagging.

How do you combat the effects of aging?

All of these changes are brought about by both controllable and uncontrollable factors. While not all effects of aging are irreversible, a few changes in your diet and lifestyle shall yield favourable results.

When it comes to your skin, one of the major changes you can do is to switch to milder anti-aging products.
